ExpanDrive v2.2 for Mac – 64 bits of awesome

Jeff Mancuso April 14th, 2011

We’re excited to release ExpanDrive v2.2.2 for the Mac! This version should feel much faster for the average user – many improvements have been made to how we handle caching of metadata so that working with larger projects should feel a lot more like working on a local disk. ExpanDrive v2.2 also now fully supports the 64-bit kernel on Snow Leopard and Lion.

This release no longer supports OS 10.4 [Tiger] or users running on the PowerPC architecture. With 10.7 [Lion] around the corner and the last PowerPC mac shipping more than 5 years ago, we need to focus on the future and start to take advantage of features only available in newer versions of OS X.

ExpanDrive for Mac 2.2.2 – Released Apri 14th, 2011

  • NEWMajor speed increase due to enhanced caching of metadata
  • NEWFull 64-bit support. ExpanDrive.app is now a full 64 bit application.
  • NEWPreliminary support for OS 10.7 Lion
  • NEWNo longer depends on MacFUSE
  • NEWIn-app purchasing
  • CHANGEDNo longer supports 10.4 [Tiger] or PPC machines

And a note for our ExpanDrive for Windows users. Development on ExpanDrive 2 for Windows continues to progress rapidly and it is being tested and developed side by side with our Mac client. Thanks for your patience!

That’s awesome – good stuff. How did you get around no longer depending on MacFUSE?

  • skye

So much faster, no longer hanging on little file transfers. Nice work!

  • Nanotron

I use Expandrive daily. 2.2′s speed improvements are greatly appreciated. Big difference from the prior version. Thanks!

  • http://pancaketheorem.com Jenn

I was very much looking forward to you dropping MacFUSE – what great news!

  • http://www.padmapper.com Eric

Whew, thanks for getting this running again – I’ve been missing it ever since I moved to a new MBP and couldn’t go back to 32 bit.

  • http://www.cs.utah.edu/~eeide/ Eric Eide

This is great; I’m very much looking forward to trying it.

Does the new version still support 32-bit kernels? I use ExpanDrive on a 32-bit machine, an older MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.

    In-app purchasing of what?

  • http://jackassletters.com Christopher L. Jorgensen

I think he means in app purchase of the app. Demo to paid?

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

Christopher is right – you download the demo, and you can get licensed in app by hitting the buy now button.

32-bit kernel is definitely still supported. Most users still use it!

A very pleasant surprise is what happened when I connected ExpanDrive to my Strongspace account (which rocks by the way). I do not want to give it away (try it your yourself and see), I just want to say Thank You Jeff.

    Cheers, Jonathan

    @Jonathan – a little treat :)

  • http://www.met.it Michele

Great news, i appreciate that you have released a fully 64bit application. I use Expandrive daily and you made my day!

I have always been pleased with ExpanDrive when accessing my company FTP, but always disappointed when using it with my Amazon S3 account. When I saw this update I was super excited about the bump in speed. I do sense an increase in speed when using it with my FTP but with S3 it is still painful. Is this S3? Is this my internet connection?

    Best, Andrew

  • Kent

    ExpanDrive 2.2 does is not compatible with “Path Finder 5.7.3″, therefore I will stay with ExpanDrive 1.1 for now. Too bad :{

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

@Kent – how is it not compatible with Path Finder?

@Andrew – speeding up S3 is a priority for our next release

  • Kent

    Hi Jeff,

For some reason the folders are not displayed properly in Pathfinder 5.7.3 on my macihne. In particular, not all the left-hand folder triangles are displayed (ie. the ones that when clicked display the folder contents), and the omitted set changes when I click on “refresh”. Perhaps my system OS is compromised, but nevertheless ExpanDrive 1.1 works. I will test Pathfinder 5.7.3 on another Snow Leopard machine and get back to you. I am keen to benefit from the promised speed increase.

    Regards, -Kent

  • Kent

    Hi Jeff,

ExpanDrive 5.7.3 seems to work with Path Finder on another machine – yeah! Perhaps I need to reinstall my OS….

    Cheers, -Kent

  • Koen

But when will we see concrete news about the next Windows version? Is it feature-complete (on par with Mac version)? Is it stable enough for daily use?

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

    Koen -

We’re not going to release concrete news until the news is concrete. Email jmancuso@expandrive.com if you want to help beta-test

I can’t wait for the Windows version to come out. I am glad to hear that it’s still coming.

  • Tobias

this version update broke my mac mini. no joke. i hit restart after the install finished and the whole UI went crazy. everything froze. i couldnt open new apps, close apps or switch between them and dialogs didnt open. i restarted and the app launching stops. i have the default dock, interface etc but i cant open apps nor do anything. wtf?

  • Tobias

just fyi removing mac fuse and rebuilding the launch service + fixing permissions fixed the issue. its normal again. just so that you know, it was on version 10.6.7 late 2010 mac mini model. services running on startup: terminal, openterminal, SIMBL (visor), grabbox, better touch tool and keyboard maestro. hope that helps…

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

Tobias – I don’t think it was ExpanDrive. First, we don’t use mac fuse anymore, but just like macFUSE, question 1.3 in the FAQ does apply

    http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/wiki/FAQ

I think something else was at play. We’re just kind of an ordinary app! -Jeff

Since I upgraded to 2.2.2 (licensed) I don’t see the results of changes to hidden files. (.filename).

I am using PathFinder and yes, I have configured it to show hidden files.

Any thoughts? Mac OS X 10.6.6

  • Kent

    Hi Jeff,

Have been using 2.2.2 since released, and haven’t had any of the lockups I had previously reported to you. So far, it’s been rock solid and is definitely more responsive all round.

    Great work !

    thanks, Kent.

you keep telling us that the Windows version “continues to progress rapidly”. Any chance to see something of this “rapid” progress?

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso
  • Hi

“This is the first major update to our Windows client ever and finally unifies our Mac and Windows products. In fact, they are now the same product that will be developed and released on both platforms at the same time.” Win Beta is 2.0.2 now, are they still gonna be unified?
