More info on Strongspace v2.0

I wanted to send a quick update about the Strongspace transition process

First off, I apologize again for the poor communication. You guys deserve much better.

Secondly, we’re still a bit behind schedule. We’ve activated accounts for some users and are opening it up to a much wider audience this next week. Your data is safe and sound and your access to it won’t be going anywhere. The transition will be a fairly simple process – you’ll log into https://www.strongspace.com with your Strongspace v1 credentials and a v2 account will be made for you. You will then be presented with the opportunity to port over your data. If you decide to port your data over, we’ll automatically take a ZFS snapshot of your data on the v1 server – lock out your v1 account so you can’t change it while the transfer is being made and then send a perfect snapshot of the data to the new server. Depending on the size of your account, this will take anywhere between a couple hours or about a day. We’ll email you when its done and you’ll be good to go.

Next week we’ll be letting you know what the pricing structure will be for the new service. Lifetime customers will remain free, non-lifetime customers will pick a plan – which will be significantly better than their original v1 plan and be given a free 30 day trial to see if they want to keep on.

The plans will be divided into 2 tiers – single-user accounts and multi-user accounts. For now, we’re only offering single user accounts. Strongspace v1 had a half-baked implementation of multi-user access which we don’t intend to continue. Strongspace v2 multi-user will be full multi-user both on the web and via SFTP/Expandrive. We’re not quite done with that yet, but it should go into testing soon. When it is complete, v1 customers who moved on to v2 will be granted up to 10 users but still be billed at the single-user pricing.

Thanks for the patience

So where does that put “lifers” as far as multi-user accounts? That’s what we use it for. It may have been half baked but it works for our team.

    Thanks!

  • Kyle

Yea. I’m with Jamie on this one.

If there isn’t any web-only multi-user support then I sure hope the sharing options are great. The simplicity in giving someone a website address and a username with password mailed to them (this should be easily set from the control panel and the lack of this in the current version is just plain stupid) was fantastic. I’d hazard a guess and say that while some people would like multi-user sftp access. The web portion was fine for a vast majority of people. Granted I realize you guys make an SFTP application to make things easier. But the requirement of an application is moving in the wrong direction. We currently have 100 half-baked users for our current plan. I sure hope lifetimers aren’t screwed over and slashed to 10. While I might only use 3-4 at a time right now and 100 might be overkill, 10 seems insufficiently small.

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

@Jamie, @Kyle – hold off on the migration then – but please email us and let us know you want to get in on our multi-user ASAP

@kyle, we’ll bump you to 100 if you need it.

  • http://charlestoncreative.com Jamie

    Will do Jeff, thanks!

    jeff [@t] strongspace?

  • Kyle

    @Jeff

I doubt I have any use for 100. But at the same time. 10 seems small in comparison. I’ll wait until I see the final numbers before I really start to get concerned. But merely stating that the current numbers, while inflated on the high end, are going to have some complaints if they dip to 90% less in the new version. There are obviously pros and cons either way. I’d encourage you to think about two possible versions of multi-user.

With some users, a web only interface may be perfectly suitable. I’d suggest keeping these types of users around and bulk up on them. But having full fledged users with SFTP access in smaller numbers would clearly be beneficial. 10 of these seems extremely fair. But lumping both together would really cut down on some of the usefulness.

Gotta remember this about Joyent as well. When we signed up for the lifetime deal we got the biggest baddest plan available with it. Or at least some of us did. I remember there being some crazy tiered stuff going on somewhere along the way. We liked the idea of it because we knew that it was clearly something we’d grow into. It was somewhat future-proof. So our expectations are high. That doesn’t mean we aren’t unreasonable about what we expect. But our expectations are high. I doubt most of the users come close to using their allotment. Myself included.

Also sent an email. Anxious to see the new version. I haven’t actually used Strongspace in quite a while because of other things going on. But was excited to see there was some movement on a service that seemed to be left in a dusty closet at Joyent.

Can you fill Bingodisk users in on what’s up? It appears that the SSL certificate has expired and I (at least) cannot access my drive space.

  • Justin Rudd

+1 on BingoDisk. There has been zero communication on that. I realize there isn’t as much money in BingoDisk as Strongspace, but we do deserve to be told what’s up.

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

We’re letting the Bingodisk accounts stay active until they expire on their own. After the Strongspace transition is mostly done for Strongspace users, we’ll give Bingodisk users to sign up for a pro-rate Strongspace plan and migrate their data in.

@colin – we’ll be updating the cert very soon.

  • Michael

My Bingodisk account expired on the 28th of last month – I haven’t seen my credit card statement yet so I’m not sure if it was just cut off or renewed for a year.

I haven’t had an option to move/upgrade yet.

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

@Michael – you weren’t charged, and you haven’t yet had the option to move your account over. We’ll get to the Bingodisk users soon enough. Sorry for the delay.

  • http://www.talkingpixels.co.uk/ Tom Scott

It would be good to receive these updates via email. I’m a BingoDisk customer and haven’t heard a peep for ages. I don’t have time to check the blogs of all my service providers.

Email updates are easy, affordable and reassuring for customers. Keep us in the loop regularly and we’re far more likely to put up with the odd delay amicably than if you go silent for long stretches of time.

  • Adam

Since I used bingodisk specifically for the webdav access and it is set to renew on nov 27th (i can’t find any option to turn that off) will I have the option to not continue using the service without getting charged once the transition happens?

  • http://www.edjones.org Ed Jones

    Jeff,

Have you sent all the Lifetime customers their transition info? I haven’t had mine :-(

    Ed

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

@Tom we have sent messages to everyone we have on file – sorry it didn’t get to you

@Adam – Bingodisk hasn’t actually billed in quite a long time, you won’t be charged

  • Neville

I haven’t received transition info for my lifetime account either. And I can’t currently log in at strongspace.com. Why is your list incomplete?

  • Saqib

I have not received the info either on the email address which is registered with my account (and added to this post).

I did receive all the past notifications but not this one. Not sure what is happening.

If this mismanagement is any indication of future than I am afraid its not too bright.

    Regards

  • Dale Chapman

I have not yet received transition information, but am receiving the update emails.

  • http://www.joshwbrown.com Joshua Brown

I also have to received a transition e-mail, but I did get the update e-mail that included the information in this post. How far through the transition are you right now?

  • Tait

I did not receive the transition e-mail either.

The strongspace twitter account states “If you haven’t gotten a Strongspace transiton email, don’t fret. Can only migrate TBs of data so quickly from west->east coast. “

Since I wasn’t migrating data, I just logged in and got the 2.0 account without any fuss.

    It looks nice.

  • http://www.talkingpixels.co.uk/ Tom Scott

Joshua, I’m not saying you haven’t sent any emails. It just that they aren’t regular and don’t tell me what’s going on. In your last email on the 28th September, you said:

“…We’re behind schedule getting everyone moved over to the new servers and we apologize. Rest assured your data is safe and sound. We have pushed back the transition horizon so that your current account will stay active until November 14th – at which point your only option will be to transition.”

It’s now 26th November and I haven’t still haven’t heard from you. I have a client with PDFs and email images which are publicly served from Bingodisk. I have no idea whether they will continue to work, if there’s going to be any downtime to plan for, whether my account will be transferred automatically, whether mapped domains will continue to work, etc. etc.

  • http://www.talkingpixels.co.uk/ Tom Scott

Oops, my last comment was meant to be for Jeff. Sorry Joshua ;)

  • Ken Lynn

I have two lifetime Strongspace accounts (25 users each). I am still able to logon to both accounts. The last communication I received was an email dated November 5. Has anything been sent since then? Communication has not been confidence inspiring.

  • http://www.joshwbrown.com Joshua Brown

    Jeff & Crew,

Can we get another update with an idea of where you guys are? Statistics would be appreciated. It’d be great to get an idea of how long the “tunnel” we’re in is.

    Thank You!

    Josh

  • Dale Chapman

    Jeff and Strongspace

I primarily use my strongspace as a backup of databases and files at Joyent, via a cron script. Will I be able to continue this strategy with the new system?

Also, I need more than one user, plain and simple. Not a lot, under 25 but I won’t be able to use the service if that is not possible.

    Update please.

  • Steve

Agreed… even if the update is still, we’re working on it, you’ve gotta communicate on a bi-weekly basis with your “new” customers. Staying in touch with some progress-based updates smooths over a lot. That said, good luck moving all those bits and bytes. Just let us know where we lifetime strongspace folks are in the queue.

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

@neville you should be able to – give it another go or email support@strongspace.com

@Saqib please shoot us an email, sorry if you have already and we missed it

I’ll be writing another post today
