Strongspace transition update

Jeff Mancuso September 28th, 2009

We wanted to send a short update giving everyone an update on the transition over to the new Strongspace service. We’re behind schedule getting everyone moved over to the new servers and we apologize. Rest assured your data is safe and sound. We have pushed back the transition horizon so that your current account will stay active until November 14th – at which point your only option will be to transition.

If you haven’t heard from us yet with details on how to transition, you can expect an email in the coming weeks with instructions on how to automatically transfer your account.

Thanks for your support and patience

    Hey Guys,

I know you are busy, but I have a statement/question…

    This statement:

“If you haven’t heard from us yet”

implies that some people do have additional information on the transition process or what it will be. I feel completely in the dark here. Is there a reason that this info would only be received by some folks and not everyone? I feel like plans for my data are shrouded in mystery unnecessarily.

“active until November 14th – at which point your only option will be to transition.”

That’s 6 weeks away and I have no idea what the hell is going on. Transition to what? How? Time line for making that transition?

Your software rocks, but your ability to communicate is sucking ATM. How about some plain English here please!? Post what is expected of us. You make these conflicting posts that start off with a casual tone and then end them with a mysterious imperative.

  • http://blog.rawlinson.us Bill

I have to agree with Jamie. As a life-time subscriber to strongspace I’d really like to know when my transition is going to happen. What happens if, by Nov 14th, you still haven’t contacted me by any means other than these vague emails?

I pretty much figured my only option was to transition when you bought Strongspace so I don’t feel like I’ve learned anything from this “update”

I’ve been ready to transition since you made the acquisition – I’ve just been waiting on you. So when’s it going to actually happen.

  • http://www.vismailamerica.com Keith McCracken

Ditto Jamie’s comments. Why not write to all now?

  • Jeff Mancuso

@Jamie, @Bill, @Keith We’re not transitioning everybody all at the exact same moment, is the basic reason.

We’ll be emailing out individual transition instructions to everyone in the coming weeks – it just isn’t all the way there yet. Apologies for having this seem vague and mysterious – but we’re not just not quite ready yet.

Your accounts remain live, and will remain live. You’ll have more than enough time to try out the new service and decide if you want to cancel your account. Like we’ve said from the beginning, all lifetime customers will be taken care of.

Please email support@expandrive.com or me at jmancuso@expandrive.com rather than posting comments – I’d like to be able to give a personal response that is more detailed and less obscurely located.

    Thanks guys

    Hey, Jeff.

Could you clarify what’s happening to BingoDisk customers specifically?

I don’t need my transition instructions yet… but it would be nice to get some clarification on pricing and service levels.

  • iPhrankie

We would also like more information on what will happen to BingoDisk.

BingoDisk is very important to our company. We use it to share large files with our remote employees.

With the planned removal of WebDAV, how will we upload large files? FTP, web upload? Will the web upload be able to handle 500mb+ files? Will there still be public URLs to files?

BingoDisk is a very basic service that provides a large amount of disk space and bandwidth to share and transfer files. If you’re going to force customers into a product that doesn’t provide the same features then that will be a shame.

  • http://charlestoncreative.com Jamie

    Thanks Jeff!

That’s more info in your follow up comment than the original post. I was not aware that this was a stepped transition from any of the emails or blog posts. I was not aware that there was much more than a software/interface change. So this helps clarify things a great deal.

I’m not able to download my files to backup before deletion. Though I can successfully log in to Strongspace via SFTP, when I try to download, the authentication fails.

  • larry p

Yes, please, Jeff, (echoing @Patrick Crowley and @iPhrankie) could you comment on BingoDisk? I know that WebDav is out. I don’t have a problem with that provided I can use sftp or something similar to upload files. But I very much would still like to have a public folder from which I can serve media files. Will there be a public sharing folder in your new version of StrongSpace? If not, do you have suggestions for alternatives?

  • http://toby@pretty.co.uk Toby

I currently can’t see my strongspace domain -does this mean it’s in transition?

I’m keen to come over to ExpanDrive, but I agree with others in your ‘we’ll be in touch’ email was a bit vague – I’m worried that I should have done something and I haven’t…

  • http://www.expandrive.com Jeff Mancuso

@Toby – it had a bit of downtime. It’s back up now

For everyone else, we’re starting to send out migration emails next week. We won’t move everyone over at the same time, please email support@expandrive.com with questions. I’m closing this thread for now.

    Jeff and the Gang,

How’s the transition going? Can we get a quick update, november approaches :)

    Josh

  • http://www.robydenmark.com Roby Denmark

I second Joshua Brown’s comment. We’re closer to the date of Nov 14th than we are from the last update (month ago).

  • http://alanmock.com Alan

I’d also like to know what’s going on. I sent an email to support@expandrive.com but I haven’t heard back from that either.

  • matt

Any updates? seriously, this transition is not leaving me confident.

  • Lou

I’ve sent emails to both support and Jeff directly. No doubt the team is busy but it’s been radio silence again. If this was just my personal files I wouldn’t give a crap, but this is my business.

  • http://www.jackfruitdesign.com Ben

I also sent emails to support about a week ago and no reply.

I’m kind of assuming that they’re going to push back their deadline of 14th November, since it’s getting closer and closer and we still don’t know anything.

Communication is not that difficult or time-consuming, but saves a lot of goodwill…

  • http://www.jackfruitdesign.com Ben

Perhaps it’s tempting for a company to view ‘lifetime’ members like those who have lifetime accounts with Strongspace as less important, because they’re not immediately brining in new revenue. I think that’s a mistake because these people can also be evangelists for your brand. Pissing them off is actually shooting yourself in the foot, in the long term.

  • http://www.joshwbrown.com Joshua Brown

    Jeff,

I wanted to personally thank you for the e-mail you sent out to all the Strongspace “transitioners” this morning. That’s exactly the kind of communications I was looking for. Good luck, and I can’t wait to get access to the new service. If things get delayed again, please let us know asap.

    Thanks!

    Josh

whats up with the expan drive transition? I have heard NOTHING from them and they keep saying they are shutting off bingo on Nov 14. i see i am not the only one on their blog posts. Lots of frustrated bingo users.

Can we just get a refund on un-used months on my account so i can switch to a company that cares (like joynet did when they were in control)?

  • http://www.joshwbrown.com Joshua Brown

I am leaving a comment here because comments on the other transition post have been closed.

    Jeff,

Where’s the update you promised at the beginning of December? Are things as bad with the transition as they seem?

If not, would you mind letting us know what’s going on?

If so, would you mind letting us know what’s going on?

    Josh

    Thanks,

    Josh

Ditto! Communication has been pitiful. Good example of Worst Practice.
